Summary.

This article represents Volume II of the exceptional work by Thomas Mair of Kinmuck, "Ellon Presbytery Records." At that time, Ellon Presbytery was composed of the parishes of Ellon (1200 parishioners), Udny (1000), Tarves (1000), Methlick (500), Logie (400), Cruden (900), Foveran (1000), and Slains ( - ). Mair carefully extracted from the original Records a rich tapestry of the life of this Presbytery - such as, the occurrence of Margaret King, vagabond and fugitive from the parish of Ellon, who was being delated for (accused of) charming and witchcraft, but who had, strangely, failed to appear before the Presbytery to answer her accusers! Such passages underline the important role played by the Presbytery in the legal proceedings of the area - cases being referred to that body by the individual parishes if of a sufficiently serious nature or if the matter had not been resolved by the local Minister sitting with his Parish Council.

This booklet is not to be missed by any individual who shares an interest in the history of this area during the period immediately following the Reformation. It yields illuminating insights into the life of the parishioners - from the lowliest to the nobility - and creates a much more fact-based foundation for their history.

This is also a most important work for those genealogists who are seeking links to the numerous families who are mentioned, including also details of where they lived. In order to maintain the quality of the scanned images they are presented here at a definition of 400dpi so they may take a little time to download. Please contact us should you wish us to send you versions with a lower definition.
