The Medieval Parishes of Scotland.

Abstract.

Cushnie Enterprises presents here an authoritative list of the Medieval Parishes of Scotland. The creation of this work has now spanned a period of some 25 years of study!

The following two lists are available:-

ALPHABETICAL LIST.

PARISHES LISTED BY DIOCESE AND DEANERY.

The lists were created by first considering the work of Professor I. B. Cowan in his 1961 PhD thesis at Edinburgh University entitled, Appropriation of Parish Churches in Medieval Scotland. This work still stands as a sure foundation for scholars. We have also considered the various volumes of the Origines Parochiales, mostly under the editorship of the learned Dr Cosmo Innes, and a number of other extracts gleaned from the various collections of chartulary that are readily available to students today.

Cushnie Enterprises is currently working towards publishing a much more comprehensive work which will include Associated Chapels, the presence/number of incised stones at the church and chapel sites, whether the church appears in Bagimond's Roll, and lands associated with the Parish Churches. This will take the form of a searchable database. (Please drop us a line if you would like to know more about this work.)

In the interests of 'interactive scholarship', we would be very grateful to receive any comments, additions, or corrections {nihil est perfectum}, that our readers may wish to send us regarding the entries in the lists available here.
