The Dipple Hoard

Abstract.

The following article (PDF), by Mr. Ian Stewart, (later Lord Stewartby), records in great detail the three coins which are all that have survived from the 'hoard' of ten coins found under the wall at Dipple churchyard. The article was first published in the British Numismatic Journal, of 1971.
Modern sources {e.g. HES Canmore database}, suggest that the three remaining coins are currently housed in the National Museums of Scotland. Thanks to the work of Dr. Alice Blackwell, Senior Curator, Medieval Archaeology & History at N.M.S., and Mr. Jesper Ericsson, Curator of Numismatics at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, it turns out that one of the three coins in question was part of the Lord Stewartby collection which was acquired by the Hunterian Museum some time ago and the other two are possibly also part of this collection. The search is on for them!
