Alness.

Associated Chapels: Cladh Thuradain {NGR NH 585673}; Tollie (Cille Mhuire) {NGR NH 522772}.

Parish Church:   OS Ref: NGR NH 645691         H.E.S. No: NH66NW       Dedication: B.V.M.

The parish church appears to have occupied the site of the present building, erected in c.1775, in the east end of the parish on the right bank of the Burn of Teananich.

The parsonage was probably a prebend of Ross in 1226/7 and was certainly so by 1445. Three chaplainries of the cathedral were also endowed from the parsonage fruits, named the Alness Chaplainries. One of these (Cladh Thuradain) appears to have been founded on the lands of Fyrish or Fyres in this parish, and another on those of Culcragy.

This was the prebend of the Sub-Dean by 1589.

The Chapel of Cladh Thuradain was dedicated to St Curitan whilst that at Tollie was dedicated to The Blessed Virgin. Cille Mhuire, at the western end of Loch Moire, was a renowned place of pilgrimage, possibly because of its remote location.

There appears to have been a bridge at Alness probably built by William Ross of Balnagowan about the year 1384.
