The Deanery of Boyne
Over the course of time, and at different times, the Deanery of Boyne had twelve parishes within it, all but one of which were appropriated - five to Arbroath Abbey, three to the cathedral, one to Coupar Angus Abbey, one to Deer Abbey, one to the Hospital of Rathven. The ancient church at Tyrie remained independent for its whole history.

* The church of Turriff was the subject of a number of appropriations and the reader is referred to its web-page for details. |
The Breac Bannoch was the ancient reliquary of St Adamnan which was said to contain some of St Columba's remains. By tradition, it was always carried at the head of a Scottish army going into battle. For many years it was kept by a family of custodians or dewars (Gael: 'deoradh') acting on behalf of Arbroath Abbey. The church of Forglen was appropriated to the Abbey and the abbey in turn paid the dewars for providing the custodial service, using income from the parish church. The reliquary was often known as the Monymusk Reliquary.
